“Canadian Researchers Shine in Global Ecology Image Contest”

Must Read

Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a worldwide image contest that showcases ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos from researchers worldwide at different stages of their careers. These images portray animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and other natural landscapes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his photograph “Intertidal education.” Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, triumphed in the category “protecting our planet” with his image “A bridge between past and present.”

For researchers, images play a vital role in documenting their work and offering a glimpse into the world of science. Brennan emphasized the importance of images in building public trust in environmental education and ecological research. He highlighted the role of visuals in conveying the value of scientific endeavors.

Brennan captured “Intertidal education” while overseeing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B. The photo showcases the students engaged in fish monitoring activities on a moonlit night, reflecting a sense of curiosity and wonder. Brennan navigated challenges posed by the Bay of Fundy’s extreme tides to capture the moment effectively.

Tian’s image, “A bridge between past and present,” features a composition of 33 drone photos showcasing the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River. The image provides a comprehensive view of the ecosystem, illustrating the impact of human actions on the environment. Tian emphasized the importance of showcasing ecosystems, even those affected by human activities, to raise awareness and foster natural empathy.

The winning images from the BMC competition span a diverse range of ecological themes, capturing the beauty and significance of nature through the lens of researchers worldwide. Through these visual narratives, researchers aim to communicate the importance of ecological studies and conservation efforts to a broader audience.
