University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently received an Ig Nobel Prize for his work on designing a splash-free urinal. The Ig Nobels are a whimsical take on the esteemed Nobel Prizes, highlighting inventive and unconventional research endeavors.
Thurairajah, along with his team, was awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their theoretical and practical efforts in creating a urinal that minimizes splashing. This recognition came as a pleasant surprise to Thurairajah, who vividly recalls the moment his supervisor shared the good news with him.
Their innovative designs, including the Nautilus and Cornucopia urinals, were tested to determine the most effective splash-reducing model. Thurairajah explained that the Nautilus design not only reduces splashing but is also easier to clean compared to the Cornucopia.
Attending the award ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues donned bright yellow raincoats, ready to be celebrated by their quirky scientific peers. Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized its practical value in enhancing public restroom facilities.
Additionally, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were also recognized at the event for their studies on unethical behavior and innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing, respectively. The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. to facilitate global participation in the event.
