German authorities are currently investigating a drone that was discovered at Leipzig airport carrying explosives and a detonator. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to escalate retaliation against countries supporting Ukraine. Lavrov stated in an interview with VGTRK, a Russian state media outlet, that they would use more severe methods to disrupt the support provided to Ukraine by Western nations.
The drone, containing an unknown explosive device, was found in the cargo operations area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, which is considered critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a vital NATO airport facilitating the transportation of armaments, ammunition, weapons, and military supplies to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo companies.
The presence of the drone, positioned next to a Ukrainian cargo plane, has raised concerns in Germany. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as posing a heightened level of danger, suggesting a sophisticated and coordinated threat rather than an amateur act.
While German authorities are investigating the origin of the drone, U.S. intelligence reports have linked it to the Russian government. In response, Germany is taking precautionary measures to bolster its anti-drone capabilities without prematurely assigning blame.
Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by Germany, including hybrid warfare tactics such as espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert operations orchestrated by foreign entities to destabilize the country and induce political and social changes.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue has been monitoring Russian interference in Germany through initiatives like Operation Overload, aimed at exploiting internal divisions within NATO member countries and Ukraine to sow discord.
German officials are vigilant against disinformation campaigns aimed at influencing politics and society, particularly as the country approaches regional elections. The aggressive nature of recent incidents, such as the drone discovery at Leipzig airport, indicates a deliberate escalation in Russia’s interference tactics, prompting questions about the threshold between defense and direct conflict.
