Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh claimed her first-ever gold medal at the Pan Pacific swimming competition by setting a championship record in the women’s 400-metre individual medley in Irvine, Calif. McIntosh outpaced Australia’s Jenna Forrester to secure the victory with a time of 4:28.01. Forrester finished second in 4:31.50, followed by Agostina Hein of Argentina in third place with a time of 4:32.54.
McIntosh expressed satisfaction with her performance, although she believed she could have achieved more. She emphasized the importance of learning from the race and analyzing her splits for future improvements. The young athlete was pleased to represent Canada and secure the top spot on the podium.
Following her individual triumph, McIntosh contributed to Canada’s success in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay, helping the team secure a bronze medal. The Canadian team, including Mary-Sophie Harvey, Emma O’Croinin, and Brooklyn Douthwright, finished third with a time of 7:52.74, behind Australia and the United States.
In other events, Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., finished fifth in the women’s 100 free, while Tristan Jankovics and Lorne Wigginton represented Canada in the men’s 400 IM, securing the 7th and 8th positions, respectively. McIntosh’s achievements were celebrated by a group of enthusiastic spectators, reflecting the support and excitement surrounding the competition.
The Pan Pacific Championships showcased outstanding performances from swimmers around the world, setting new records and highlighting the competitive spirit among athletes. McIntosh’s success in both individual and team events demonstrated her talent and determination on the international stage.
