Skate Canada made an announcement on Wednesday that Mike Slipchuk will be stepping down as the high-performance director at the end of the 2026-27 season, concluding a 20-year tenure in the position. Slipchuk joined Skate Canada in 2006 and during his leadership, Canadian figure skaters achieved remarkable success, securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
Notably, Canada clinched four Olympic medals under Slipchuk’s guidance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, including gold medals in ice dance by Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, as well as in the team event. Virtue and Moir’s gold medals made them the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history with three gold and two silver medals.
Despite recent Olympic challenges, such as no medals at the Beijing 2022 Games and only one bronze in ice dance by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in Milan Cortina earlier this year, Canada has consistently produced world champions across various disciplines. Noteworthy achievements include Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011-2013 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals.
Skate Canada has confirmed that Slipchuk will continue to be involved in an advisory capacity post his resignation to aid in the transition to a new high-performance director.
