The decision was swiftly made by the league, in partnership with the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers, shortly after the commencement of their best-of-three final at CAA Centre. The game was abruptly stopped and eventually canceled due to unsafe playing conditions caused by condensation on the court.
Brampton initially took a 6-0 lead, but Winnipeg quickly caught up. The game was paused when Xavier Moon of the Sea Bears, a three-time CEBL MVP, slipped on the court with 8:14 remaining in the first quarter. As a result, the league announced that the final showdown will now be a single decisive game on Saturday in Winnipeg at 3:30 p.m. ET, a change from the planned multi-game championship series.
The CEBL explained that the shift to a one-game final was deemed the most fair and practical approach to determining the champion, reverting to the format used in previous years. Brampton’s CEO, Al Whitley, expressed regret over the cancellation of the game.
Having won a CEBL title in 2022, the Honey Badgers are eager to seize another victory.
