A distinct marvel in nature, the narwhal tusk can reach lengths of up to three meters. This elongated tooth emerges through the whale’s lip on the left side, growing perfectly straight without any curves, making it the sole mammal tusk to exhibit this unique trait.
An international team of researchers recently unraveled the mystery behind the tusk’s straight growth, attributing it to its distinctive pattern of opposing spirals. The revelation of two opposing spirals, one spiraling right and the other left, sheds light on the tusk’s straight development, as detailed in a recent study published in Nature Communications.
The investigation was sparked when Henrik Birkedal, from Aarhus University in Denmark, was approached by an organic chemistry colleague intrigued by the directionality of molecules. Prompted by the observation that narwhal tusks spiral uniformly to the left, Birkedal spearheaded a collaborative effort with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden to delve into the molecular structure of these tusks and their spirals.
Through advanced imaging akin to CT scans, the research team unveiled the complex composition of the tusks, primarily composed of dentine and cementum, lacking the enamel layer found in human teeth. Notably, the tusks exhibit two opposing spirals: a left-handed spiral on the outer cementum layer and a right-handed spiral within the dentine layer.
This discovery not only demystifies the straightness of narwhal tusks but also holds promise in elucidating the structural principles of human bones and similar biological instances, according to Birkedal. Furthermore, Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist at Harvard University, lauds the research’s focus on this extraordinary tooth, emphasizing its primary function as a sensory organ rather than for defense or feeding purposes, as revealed in his earlier studies.
