“Club Kid” portrays Peter, depicted by Jordan Firstman, as he navigates the drug-fueled lifestyle of a “Club Kid” without direction in life. Peter, a carefree yet discontented man in his thirties, resides in his late mother’s spacious New York loft. He irresponsibly attends his party-promoter job high on drugs and struggles to find motivation after being fired.
The film also introduces Arlo, a young boy with green hair, who shows up at Peter’s door a decade after a regrettable encounter between Peter (who is gay) and a British woman at one of his parties. Arlo is left in Peter’s care following his mother’s sudden death, despite Peter’s initial shock and reluctance to take on the responsibility.
As Peter grapples with the unexpected role of a father figure, he confronts his own insecurities and fears about parenthood. The movie delves into the challenges and humor of caregiving, showcasing the comical yet touching moments of Peter’s journey with Arlo.
While “Club Kid” follows a familiar narrative of an adult finding purpose through caring for a child, it cleverly subverts conventional tropes. The evolving relationship between Peter and Arlo challenges the audience’s expectations, leading to surprising twists and emotional revelations.
Through its authentic performances and exploration of New York’s party scene, “Club Kid” shines in its portrayal of personal growth and sacrifice. The film highlights the complexity of adulthood and the transformative power of genuine connection, making it a standout at the Toronto International Film Festival.
