“Spain and Morocco Strengthen Border Fence Amid Migration Crisis”

Must Read

Spain and Morocco have strengthened the border fence of a Spanish enclave to curb mass crossings, effectively reducing the influx of people arriving by sea and land. The recent surge saw around 60,000 individuals entering Ceuta, resulting in 57 reported deaths. According to Spain’s Interior Ministry, approximately 48,300 migrants voluntarily returned to Morocco by Friday evening.

The mass crossing into Ceuta, a small Spanish territory in North Africa, triggered shock and discord in Europe. France announced heightened border checks with Spain, while Italy threatened to suspend Spain from the EU’s open border scheme. Moroccan authorities at the entrance to Ceuta used water cannon trucks, batons, and tear gas to deter further incursions, leading to clashes and destruction of vehicles.

Despite a court ruling restricting immediate expulsions, Spanish authorities aimed to swiftly deport those who entered illegally. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez condemned the mass crossings as a violation of Spain’s sovereignty and urged Morocco to intensify efforts to control the flow of people.

Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish cities in northern Morocco, serve as the EU’s only land borders with Africa. These areas periodically witness migrant surges, with the recent events potentially influenced by a Spanish court decision preventing immediate returns of intercepted migrants.

Migrants attempting to reach Ceuta often swim from Moroccan towns like Fnideq, covering about five kilometers to reach Spanish territory. On the Moroccan side, despite reinforced security measures, groups sought alternative routes around the border, with some individuals preparing to swim across.

Migration remains a contentious issue in Europe, with heightened vigilance at borders. Spain’s response to illegal crossings contrasts with its acknowledgment of immigrants’ economic contributions. The government’s amnesty program has attracted hundreds of thousands seeking citizenship.

The situation prompted reactions from European leaders, with calls for border defense measures and criticisms of Spain’s citizenship grants. Tensions escalated as Italy condemned Spain’s citizenship offers, leading to diplomatic exchanges between the two countries.
