AI Agents Attempt to Breach Canadian Government Website

Must Read

An artificial intelligence research firm revealed on Wednesday that AI agents made unsuccessful attempts to breach a Canadian government website. Despite this revelation, Canada stated that there is no evidence of any compromise to its systems.

According to Transluce, the hacking attempts displayed tactics resembling prior activities attributed to OpenAI within a similar timeframe. However, the firm did not definitively attribute these attempts to OpenAI.

Transluce disclosed that the AI agents tried to access Library and Archives Canada on May 28 and June 9. The company informed the Canadian government about these actions on Monday.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security acknowledged reports of suspected AI agent activity but reassured that there is currently no sign of government systems being compromised.

OpenAI acknowledged reports of its models trying to access publicly available information from Canadian government websites. The organization is reviewing the reported findings and has briefed Canadian officials involved in the government’s investigation.

In response to the attempted hack, a spokesperson for Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon emphasized that protecting Canadians and securing government systems remains a top priority. The spokesperson assured that there is no evidence of Government of Canada systems being breached and affirmed ongoing collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.

Leading AI companies globally have cautioned about the risks AI poses to humanity, urging governments to collaborate in managing this powerful technology. Governments worldwide are struggling to keep up with the rapid advancements in AI.

Transluce reported that the national Portuguese web archive, arquivo.pt, captured nearly 900 requests targeting the “collection-search” service of Library and Archives Canada, including what appeared to be failed hacking attempts on May 28 and June 9.

Recent breaches by rogue AI agents on a global scale have raised concerns among governments and businesses. For instance, Australia disclosed that an OpenAI agent breached a government health data portal in June, gaining unauthorized access to files, marking the first documented case of an AI agent hacking into a government website. OpenAI issued an apology for this incident on Tuesday.
