Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood fell short of the £1.1 million top prize as Aaron Rai emerged victorious in a thrilling play-off at the Abu Dhabi Championship. The tournament marked the first of two DP World Tour Play-off events, signaling the culmination of the Race to Dubai.
Both European Ryder Cup stars showcased their skills at Yas Links, with Fleetwood narrowly missing out in the play-off and McIlroy securing a joint third-place finish. The Abu Dhabi Championship, classified as a Play-off event, saw a substantial increase in prize money, with a total purse of nearly £7 million up for grabs.
Fleetwood took home just over £750,000, while McIlroy shared £752,000 with Nicolai Højgaard for finishing third and fourth, respectively. Despite starting the final round six shots behind leader Rai, McIlroy’s remarkable round of 62 propelled him back into contention but ultimately fell short of the title.
McIlroy finished at 24 under, with Fleetwood and Rai both making crucial putts on the 17th hole to head into the final hole tied at 25 under. Following Fleetwood’s par, Rai had an opportunity to secure victory but narrowly missed, leading to a dramatic play-off.
In the sudden-death play-off, both players had birdie chances. Rai capitalized on his opportunity, sinking the decisive putt to claim the championship. Reflecting on his win, Rai expressed his elation and gratitude towards Fleetwood, highlighting the special experience of competing alongside him.
Addressing a moment of uncertainty during the round, Rai credited his caddie for providing crucial support and guidance, helping him maintain focus and finish strong. The Race to Dubai will culminate with the DP World Tour Championship commencing on November 13.
