“AI Data Center in Alberta Could Spike Power Bills”

Must Read

Artificial intelligence data centers are known for their high electricity consumption, raising concerns about potential impacts on consumer energy costs in Alberta. A recent report from the Pembina Institute suggests that the Meta Data Centre planned for Sturgeon County could lead to an increase of $270 to $460 per year on household power bills once operational.

According to the report, data centers are critical facilities that house the computing hardware required for various tech applications utilizing AI. In 2023, data centers represented 4.4% of U.S. electricity demand, with projections indicating a potential rise to 12% by 2028.

Meta Platforms Inc., the company behind Facebook and Instagram, announced a $13 billion data center complex set to go online in the next few years. This facility will be linked to the $4.6 billion Greenlight Electricity Centre, which is expected to produce 932 megawatts of power initially, with the capacity to double in the future.

While the provincial government and Meta have assured that the data center will not hike electricity prices for Albertans, experts warn of potential upward pressure on consumer electricity prices during the period between the data center’s opening and the power plant’s completion.

The report indicates that the impact on electricity prices could be most significant before the Greenlight plant becomes operational, with the period between 2027 and 2031 being crucial. Experts suggest that without simultaneous new generation capacity, projects like Meta’s data center could influence electricity prices.

As Meta’s operations could strain existing generating capacity, concerns arise about potential price hikes due to increased demand. However, renewable energy sources and energy-saving technologies could help alleviate these challenges by balancing supply and demand.

The federal government has released guidelines for responsible data center development to ensure that consumers are not burdened with increased electricity costs. Meta has pledged to fund new generation and grid infrastructure, emphasizing a commitment to clean and renewable energy to benefit consumers. Alberta’s government assures consumers of fixed electricity rates and regulated price increases to mitigate the impact of data center developments on energy costs.
