Flight attendants employed on Air Canada Express flights are currently in the process of voting to decide whether to authorize a strike following a breakdown in bargaining talks, as announced by their union. The Canadian Flight Attendant Union, representing approximately 1,000 flight attendants, has disclosed that they are seeking a strike mandate after unsuccessful negotiations with Jazz Aviation regarding key issues, despite nine months of discussions and involvement of a mediator.
In a recent news release, the CFAU emphasized the importance of a strong strike mandate from its members to convey the seriousness of the unresolved matters and the determination of its members. However, Jazz Aviation remains dedicated to achieving a mutually acceptable agreement at the negotiation table without any disruptions to its operations. The company is now pursuing the appointment of a conciliation officer as the discussions with the Canadian Flight Attendant Union have reached an impasse.
The primary concerns for the union include wages, compensation for ground duties, and enhancements recognizing the impact of the job on their members’ lives. Chris Schliep, the union’s vice-president, highlighted that while progress has been made on certain aspects in recent months, significant issues still need resolution. The union believes that their members deserve fair recognition for their responsibilities and work compared to their counterparts in other Canadian airlines.
Moreover, the union is advocating for its members to be acknowledged as safety professionals for their roles in ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers, including conducting checks, attending briefings, and assisting with passenger boarding. Safety concerns were underscored following a tragic incident involving Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 at LaGuardia Airport earlier this year, resulting in the loss of both pilots.
Marsha Walters, president of the Canadian Flight Attendant Union, emphasized the importance of fair working conditions, adequate rest, and respect for flight attendants who are entrusted with passenger safety every day. Voting on the strike mandate is set to conclude on Friday at noon. This development comes shortly after WestJet flight attendants recently went on strike, and just over a year after over 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants took similar action. The potential timing of a strike by Air Canada Express flight attendants, if the strike mandate is approved, remains uncertain.
