“Child Entrepreneurs Flourish in Canada’s Rising Youth Business Scene”

Must Read

Many children in Canada are embracing entrepreneurship, with an increasing number venturing into business endeavors. Six-year-old Jayden Karlee Castillo kickstarted her toy-selling business in front of her home, expanding her products and customer base over the years. Recently, she participated in the inaugural Kids Markets event in Millarville, Alta., where she showcased a range of self-made items like bracelets, earrings, 3D-printed toys, hand sanitizers, and squishies sourced from wholesalers.

The Kids Markets initiative enables children aged five to 17 to sell their creations, complementing other programs like BizKids Market in B.C., Kid2Kid in Toronto, and the Children’s Business Fair in Brandon, Man. According to Jodi Letkiewicz, a finance professor, there has been a surge in young entrepreneurs, possibly influenced by social media exposure to peers running businesses. Lemonade Day Calgary, which supports kids in operating lemonade stands, saw a significant increase in participation, showcasing the growing interest in entrepreneurship among youth.

Letkiewicz noted that children are increasingly aware of financial matters due to discussions about the cost of living, spurring their curiosity about earning money independently. The fearless and creative nature of kids, coupled with the abundance of resources like social media and AI tools, has fueled their entrepreneurial spirit. This trend is further supported by family encouragement and community resources, providing a solid foundation for young entrepreneurs.

The benefits of kid entrepreneurs extend beyond financial gains, as they acquire valuable skills like financial literacy, problem-solving, teamwork, and business management. Successful entrepreneurs like Atley Ma, who founded SodaKid at the age of nine, exemplify the potential for growth and learning through entrepreneurship. Ma, now 18, has funded his university education through SodaKid and highlights the advantages of being a youthful entrepreneur in a competitive market. The experience gained from running a business at a young age has proven to be invaluable for many, setting them on a path to future success and personal development.
