“Drought-stressed Balsam firs turning red and dying in New Brunswick”

Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are exhibiting a concerning phenomenon of turning red and dying following the extreme drought experienced last summer, prompting worries about the fate of the provincial tree. Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been receiving reports from woodlot owners and witnessing the detrimental effects firsthand. The iconic evergreen trees, commonly used as Christmas trees, are gradually changing color, drying up, and perishing.

According to Prof. Taylor, the observed pattern aligns with previous instances after hot and dry summers. He emphasized that the warm and dry conditions of the drought negatively impact the growth of balsam fir trees. His extensive research on climate change’s effects on New Brunswick’s forests indicates that similar die-offs occurred following unusually hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018.

The trees, in response to drought conditions, halt their photosynthesis process prematurely, hindering their growth. This interruption prevents them from generating the necessary energy reserves for basic metabolic and defense processes, as explained by Taylor. Consequently, the trees become more vulnerable, increasing the likelihood of die-offs especially when already stressed by insects or pathogens.

Moreover, the shallow root system of balsam firs makes it challenging for them to access water during dry spells. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, noticed the damage to his balsam firs starting in June, with the trees progressively turning red from the lower branches upwards. He continues to witness new red spots daily, indicating that the die-off is ongoing. McKeil estimates that approximately 100 trees have already perished on his property.

While McKeil has managed to salvage some of the dead trees for lumber, he is adjusting his harvesting practices to maximize the remaining fir’s value before further losses occur. Concerned about the worsening impact of climate change, he believes that the species, particularly in southern New Brunswick, is facing a bleak future and may need to adapt or migrate northward to survive.

Professor Taylor views the sight of red trees this year as both supportive of his research and a visible indication of the adverse effects of climate change on New Brunswick’s iconic tree. He likens it to a canary in a coal mine, underscoring that it is a tangible symptom of climate change. Taylor hopes that his research will continue to raise awareness and drive action, emphasizing the urgent need to reduce fossil fuel consumption and forest exploitation to mitigate climate change’s effects on balsam fir trees and the environment.
