Another Conservative figure, Nadhim Zahawi, has switched allegiance to Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. Zahawi, a former Cabinet Minister known for his role in the Covid vaccine rollout, joined the party today, bringing both influence and controversy.
Despite his prominent position during the pandemic, Zahawi faced scrutiny for breaching the ministerial code by not disclosing HMRC investigations into his tax affairs while serving as Chancellor. He later paid a substantial sum to HMRC, including a penalty. Additionally, Zahawi has been criticized for claiming electricity bills for his stables on expenses in 2013 and attending a controversial men-only gala in 2018.
Zahawi’s wealth, business connections, and attempted bid to acquire the Daily Telegraph make him an attractive asset for Reform UK as they aim to attract donors and improve their public image. However, his background raises questions about the party’s true nature and its alignment with traditional conservatism.
The defection of Zahawi triggered a strong reaction from the Conservatives, who allege that he sought a peerage before joining Reform UK, a claim he denies. Zahawi now joins other former Boris Johnson loyalists in the party, signaling a lack of confidence in the Prime Minister’s political future.
In a press conference, Zahawi expressed his belief that the country is in a state of distress, pointing to the failures of the past four Tory Prime Ministers. Whether the public will accept his narrative that Reform UK offers the necessary solution remains uncertain.
