Growing up in the Philippines, I had never experienced the excitement of hockey until I moved to Canada in 2010. It was during the Winter Olympics that year when I witnessed the unforgettable moment of Sidney Crosby scoring the golden goal against the U.S. in a thrilling overtime final. The unity and jubilation that swept across Canada after that victory left a lasting impression on me.
As a new immigrant in Canada, I was captivated by the way hockey seemed to be ingrained in the country’s culture. I gradually became more interested in the sport, especially after attending my first live game in 2014 between the Edmonton Oilers and the Anaheim Ducks. The energy and enthusiasm of the crowd at the arena were infectious, and I felt a sense of belonging as part of the cheering fans.
Over time, I began to understand the significance of hockey in Canadian society. It was not just a sport but a unifying force that brought communities together. I embraced the hockey culture, from learning about legendary players like Wayne Gretzky to following key matchups like the “Battle of Alberta.” Watching games on TV and joining conversations with co-workers further deepened my appreciation for the sport.
In 2016, I relocated to Vancouver and met Mike, a die-hard hockey fan who reignited my passion for the game. Our shared love for hockey became a cornerstone of our relationship, with Saturday night hockey and nachos becoming a cherished tradition. Despite our differences in sports preferences, we found joy in embracing each other’s interests and supporting one another.
Through my relationship with Mike, I learned the nuances of hockey, from game terms like cherry-picking to understanding the physicality of the sport. Our shared experiences at hockey games and tennis matches have enriched our bond and allowed us to appreciate each other’s passions.
Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver has become a regular outing for us, where we proudly don our Canucks and Oilers jerseys. Our unique blend of sports fandom has become a symbol of our relationship, with the mantra “Love conquers all” guiding us through any differences.
From my initial exposure to hockey during the 2010 Winter Olympics to present day, my journey with the sport has been transformative. Hockey has not only connected me to Canadian culture but has also played a significant role in shaping my love story with Canada. It has become more than a game; it is a source of unity, conversation, and shared experiences that have enriched my life in remarkable ways.
