Hari Budha Magar, a Gurkha veteran from Nepal who served in the British Army for 15 years, suffered the loss of both his legs in an IED blast in Afghanistan back in 2010.
Rather than focusing on his own challenges, Hari’s primary goal has been to motivate others that achieving the impossible is within reach, regardless of the obstacles life throws your way.
Leading by example, Hari, aged 46, made history as the first above-the-knee amputee to conquer Mount Everest and now aims to scale the highest peaks on all seven continents – only two summits away from completing this ambitious feat by January 2026.
Receiving a Special Recognition Award at the prestigious Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, Hari expressed his elation, stating, “I was absolutely thrilled. It was a true honor.”
Reflecting on the unexpected honor, Hari mentioned, “My main goal was to climb mountains and raise awareness about disabilities.”
Although Hari has journeyed across the globe tackling mountain peaks, he had never experienced a cruise ship voyage until now.
Partnering with the awards, P&O Cruises surprised all winners, including Hari, with a cruise holiday as a gesture of appreciation.
Expressing his surprise and gratitude, Hari, a married father of three ranging from 12 to 29 years old, shared, “The vacation was beyond amazing, and it was a family trip. We had never been on a cruise before, and it allowed us to bond and partake in new experiences.”
Embarking on a spring voyage to the Norwegian Fjords aboard the Iona, the family relished a week exploring the picturesque landscapes, glaciers, and fjords ashore.
Hari marveled at the diverse activities available, such as riding the Loen Skylift to Mount Hoven, one of the world’s steepest cable cars, offering breathtaking views of Nordfjord.
Sharing his fond memories, Hari highlighted the train journey to the scenic village of Olden, renowned for its natural beauty, making it an ideal spot for those with mobility constraints or limited walking abilities.
Diving into the onboard activities, including the cinema, swimming pools, and spa, Hari and his family also enjoyed themed nights like Celebration Night, creating lasting memories throughout the cruise.
One particularly touching moment for Hari was celebrating his daughter’s birthday with a special family dinner arranged by P&O Cruises at Epicurean, featuring a six-course meal and a birthday cake.
Taking the opportunity to inspire others, Hari shared his remarkable journey with fellow passengers on board the Iona, receiving warm responses and engaging with guests who were eager to hear more.
Despite his mountain roots, Hari discovered a newfound love for the sea and expressed interest in planning future cruise vacations, emphasizing the accessibility and inclusivity of the ship for individuals with mobility challenges.
Encouraging others in similar situations, Hari advised, “Just take the leap. People are kind and helpful. Be open, ask for assistance, and you’ll navigate smoothly.”
