Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood criticized demonstrators supporting Palestine as “un-British” following the recent attack at a synagogue in Manchester. Ms. Mahmood expressed disappointment in the protesters’ actions and emphasized the need for empathy towards the grieving community. The attack resulted in the deaths of Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, with three others sustaining serious injuries.
Thousands of individuals gathered in various UK cities to protest after a Gaza-bound aid flotilla was intercepted, leading to detentions, including environmental activist Greta Thunberg. Ms. Mahmood condemned the protests that took place, describing the behavior as against British values and lacking honor.
The Metropolitan Police reported 40 arrests during the protests, with clashes occurring near Downing Street and calls for demonstrations at 18 other locations in the UK. The attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue by terrorist Jihad Al-Shamie on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, heightened concerns for the Jewish community’s safety.
Ms. Mahmood reassured the Jewish community of enhanced policing efforts and collaboration with security organizations to ensure their safety. She encouraged normalcy in daily activities and emphasized the community’s right to practice their faith without fear, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding their security.
