Labour Party’s Failures Exposed: Public Workers Struggle

Must Read

Having served as a social worker for many years, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by public service workers. Despite being 18 months into a Labour government, the situation for my colleagues remains dire.

Our pay has continuously decreased while the cost of living continues to rise, putting a strain on our finances. Additionally, we have watched in dismay as essential services that were once integral to our communities have been systematically dismantled by policymakers.

Throughout my career within a local authority, I have observed the detrimental effects of budget cuts. Since 2010, local authorities have been stripped of assets amounting to £15 billion. In areas like Bolton, council funding has been reduced by over a quarter, impacting the lives of ordinary citizens who rely on these services.

Despite promises of national renewal, the Labour party has failed to address these issues effectively. To truly govern in the interest of the working class, Labour must prioritize the well-being of the majority over financial markets and special interest groups.

It is crucial for Labour to focus on improving wages and reducing living costs to truly make a difference in people’s lives. Initiatives such as providing public workers with inflation-proof pay raises and promoting sector-wide collective bargaining through an updated Employment Rights Bill are essential steps in the right direction.

As the UNISON general secretary, my primary goal is to advocate for the working class and enhance their circumstances. Labour must shift its focus from military spending to investing in public services to create positive change.

In light of recent events, it is evident that there is a need for realignment in political priorities. Rather than prioritizing military actions, resources should be directed towards strengthening social structures and revitalizing industries for the benefit of the people.

As we welcome the new year with hope for renewal, it is disheartening to witness the unjust imprisonment of individuals standing up against injustice. It is imperative for leaders to condemn such actions and uphold international law.

As a representative of UNISON, I am committed to standing with and for the workers I represent. By staying true to the realities faced by our members, we can work towards creating a better future for all.

Recent events in Venezuela underscore the importance of condemning unlawful actions and advocating for justice on the international stage. Leaders must distance themselves from lawlessness and prioritize upholding the rule of law.
