A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Leanne Williams, 47, whose body was found at her residence in Townhill, Swansea. Matthew Battenbough, aged 34, admitted to the crime and will serve a minimum of 20 years and 114 days in prison.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Leanne Williams lived alone and struggled with substance abuse issues, making her vulnerable to exploitation. She had encountered Battenbough in Swansea city center before the tragic events unfolded.
On the day of the incident, Leanne was seen with Battenbough engaging in various activities before returning to her flat. Surveillance footage captured their entry into the property, marking the last time she was seen alive. Battenbough left the flat multiple times that evening, eventually abandoning the scene.
Miss Williams’ body was discovered days later in a distressing state, with evidence of severe physical injuries. The court learned that Battenbough’s DNA was found at the crime scene, and forensic examinations revealed the extent of the violence inflicted on the victim.
Despite the absence of a detailed account of the events from Battenbough, the court concluded that Leanne Williams had been subjected to a deliberate and brutal attack resulting in her death. Following his guilty plea, Battenbough was remorseless in court, leading to a stern sentencing by Judge Paul Thomas.
Battenbough’s criminal history, lack of remorse, and the heinous nature of the crime were factors considered in the sentencing decision. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense, ensuring that Battenbough serves a substantial term before any possibility of release is considered by the Parole Board.
