In a modest apartment in Neumunster, Germany, Christian Brueckner, the suspect linked to the Madeleine McCann case, resided briefly after his recent release from prison. Following a leak of his location on a local WhatsApp group, Brueckner hastily vacated the flat as outraged locals confronted him while being escorted by the police.
Carrying only a few belongings in two carrier bags, Brueckner walked calmly to a police car with his hands in his pockets. The apartment was minimally furnished with just a single bed, a chair, and a desk with a lamp, while the other rooms were empty. German authorities consider the 48-year-old Brueckner their prime suspect in the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine in 2007 during a family holiday in Portugal.
Despite living near the location where Madeleine vanished, Brueckner denies any involvement in her disappearance. Recently released from prison after serving time for a separate crime, he was seen enjoying a meal at McDonald’s and purchasing a mobile phone, seemingly indifferent to his ankle tag.
During his stay in prison, Brueckner hinted at possessing information that could potentially resolve a major scandal, mentioning something about USB sticks. Although he remains under suspicion in the Madeleine case, the police have not issued an arrest warrant due to a lack of concrete forensic evidence linking him to the crime.
After his release, Brueckner declared himself homeless and was provided emergency accommodation in a German suburb, where he is required to wear an ankle tag for the next five years. Concerns about his safety and repeated recognition have led to discussions about relocating him to Munich. Brueckner’s legal team is exploring options for him to leave Germany, possibly seeking refuge in a country that does not have extradition agreements with Europe or the UK, like Suriname.
