Andy Donovan, a 23-year-old marketing executive from Exeter, Devon, faced an unexpected charge when trying to take an extra suitcase on his Qatar Airways flight to Melbourne. Planning a cricket trip to Kingsbury, Melbourne, Andy initially booked a Cathay Pacific flight but switched to a Qatar Airways flight due to a typhoon threat in Hong Kong.
The Qatar Airways flight, scheduled for September 22, cost Andy £312.28 initially. However, his baggage allowance was reduced to one checked bag instead of two, prompting him to try to purchase an additional bag online. When he encountered technical issues with the website, Andy resorted to buying the extra bag at the airport, only to be shocked by the £1,103.72 charge for the 25kg bag.
Andy, who needed the extra luggage for his cricket gear, expressed surprise at the steep fee, which was multiple times the cost of his ticket. Despite feeling compelled to pay to ensure he could take his equipment, Andy criticized the lack of transparency in the charge calculation.
His father, Barry Donovan, a retired pilot, intervened to help cover the unexpected expense, describing the situation as “extortionate.” Barry pointed out the absence of clear luggage restrictions on the tickets and criticized the airline’s handling of the situation, emphasizing the disproportionate nature of the charge.
Both Andy and Barry attempted to reach out to Qatar Airways for clarification but received no response. Barry questioned the fairness of the airline’s practices, calling for accountability and expressing concern about the treatment of other passengers in similar situations.
In response to the incident, a Qatar Airways spokesperson clarified that Andy was traveling on a standby staff ticket from another airline, which typically does not include ancillary services like excess baggage until confirmed. The spokesperson stated that the excess baggage charge was applied in accordance with standard procedures once Andy’s flight was confirmed.
Andy, who plays for the Philippines national cricket team, was ultimately able to proceed with his journey to Melbourne, albeit at a significantly higher cost than anticipated.
