Markham is gearing up for a thrilling weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. This marks the first time the race will take place outside of Toronto, on a brand-new track layout spanning 3.52 kilometers with 12 turns. The track will traverse the Unionville GO station area, the York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre.
To reach the event, attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407, with parking available west of the event grounds. Metrolinx is enhancing Stouffville Line services to facilitate transportation to and from the track.
Road closures in Markham, due to track construction, will impact several roads in Markham Centre until Monday morning, including parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard. Some closures will extend until August 27 for track dismantling.
The race day on Sunday will feature the IndyCar series, with the points leader, Alex Palou, being a strong contender for victory. Other drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent in support series includes Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier.
Drivers have noted the unique challenges of the Markham track, such as its smooth surface and elevation changes. Tickets for the event can be purchased online, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions being free as part of Fan Friday, encouraging donations to Make-A-Wish Canada.
The excitement is building in Markham as it prepares to showcase high-speed racing action this weekend at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event.
