A mother, Michelle Perry, tragically passed away after engaging in an impulsive act following a dispute, as revealed in an inquest. Michelle, aged 44, was found unresponsive in an alleyway on November 16 and was pronounced dead at the scene. The court learned that Michelle, who had previously resided in a women’s refuge, had been battling mental health issues and alcohol misuse but had been striving to improve her life in the months leading up to her death. It was disclosed during the inquest that Michelle had an argument with her partner on the night of her demise.
Detective Superintendent Dean of Greater Manchester Police stated that CCTV footage from a nearby property in Oldham indicated that the couple had a confrontation, capturing Michelle leaving her tent, where she had been living, shortly after. Investigators ruled out external involvement after scrutinizing the evidence. Michelle’s daughter, Courtney Nicholson, testified that she had seen her mother the day before her passing and described Michelle, from Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester, as behaving normally. Dr. Hunjan, Michelle’s GP, mentioned at the Rochdale Coroner’s Court inquest that Michelle had long struggled with anxiety, depression, and alcohol use. She had been receiving medication prior to her death and had missed two appointments with mental health services.
Courtney shared during the inquest that her mother had been open with her family about her mental health challenges. Forensic pathologist Dr. Charles Wilson determined hanging as the medical cause of Michelle’s death. He noted injuries consistent with those of individuals with substance abuse issues or living on the streets.
Coroner Catherine McKenna concluded that Michelle’s death was due to misadventure, finding no evidence indicating an intention to end her life. Summarizing the case, Ms. McKenna described Michelle’s passing as an impulsive act following an argument, emphasizing the absence of intent.
In a post-death fundraiser, Michelle’s daughters expressed her loving and caring nature, highlighting her unwavering support for those she cared about. They emphasized Michelle’s pride in her children and grandchildren, stating that family was paramount to her.
