An easyJet traveler recounts her experience of contesting a fine imposed by the airline for an oversized bag. Louise Machin expressed her surprise and confusion when she was charged €58 (£51) upon returning from Chania Airport in Crete, despite meticulously checking her bag’s dimensions in advance.
Following a dispute, easyJet reimbursed the fee after Machin contacted the bag manufacturer to confirm compliance with the airline’s regulations. This incident is not isolated, with other passengers erroneously facing penalties for oversized cabin bags due to issues with airport bag sizers, as highlighted by consumer group Which?
Machin, a 59-year-old resident of Crystal Palace, south London, encountered the issue on a trip to Crete earlier this year. Despite prior checks, she was confronted during check-in for her return flight, leading to a tense situation where she ultimately paid the fine to proceed.
Upon verifying her bag’s compliance with easyJet’s standards through the manufacturer, Cabin Max, Machin successfully obtained a refund from the airline. Similar concerns have been raised regarding other airlines penalizing passengers for minor size discrepancies, often related to baggage sizers at airports.
Which? recommends that passengers contest fines if they believe their bags meet the required dimensions. Despite easyJet asserting no faults with the sizers at Chania Airport, they acknowledged Machin’s complaint and issued a refund, emphasizing their commitment to address customer feedback on a case-by-case basis.
