Russia’s top court has directed the exclusion of the sole party opposing the Kremlin’s military actions in Ukraine from the upcoming parliamentary election ballot. The Supreme Court invalidated the registration of Yabloko, known as “apple” in Russian, following a petition from a pro-Kremlin party. Initially permitted by the Central Election Commission along with 10 other parties, Yabloko, once a prominent liberal voice in parliament critical of the government, lost its seats in the State Duma as the Kremlin solidified its control over Russian politics.
Yabloko, the only registered opposition party resisting the deployment of troops to Ukraine, was stripped off its campaign spot. The party advocated for a ceasefire agreement, diplomacy, peace, and a Russia free from fear and political oppressions. Grigory Yavlinsky, a veteran liberal politician and co-founder of Yabloko, expressed dismay over the ruling and announced plans to challenge it, emphasizing the significance of engaging in dialogue with dissenting voices.
Despite being urged by various exiled Russian opposition figures to support Yabloko, including Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Alexei Navalny, and politicians Ilya Yashin and Vladimir Kara-Murza, the party faced backlash from Kremlin-aligned parties. Criticisms were aimed at Yabloko’s stance on Ukraine and accusations of copyright infringement and exceeding campaign expenditure limits. The Motherland Party led the charge against Yabloko, alleging unlawful positions on Ukraine jeopardizing Russia’s territorial integrity.
Yabloko’s campaign for peace resonated with the public, challenging the Kremlin’s authority, which had initially permitted the party on the ballot to gauge dissent while expecting limited support. The court’s decision to bar Yabloko from the election underscored the party’s influence and public demand for peace and freedom. The party’s leadership rejected accusations and maintained its stance amidst increasing pressure from the Kremlin crackdown on dissent.
