Eight skydivers made a timely escape by parachuting from a plane just moments before it crashed, resulting in the tragic death of the pilot, Paul Smith, aged 54. The fatal incident occurred in New South Wales, Australia.
According to NSW Police Inspector Justin Marks, the group of eight skydivers safely exited the aircraft at an altitude of approximately 14,000 feet, narrowly evading disaster as the plane went down near Moruya, landing in thick bushland adjacent to George Bass Drive.
The late Mr. Smith, a seasoned skydiver with nearly 40 years of experience, held over 10,000 hours as a pilot in command. Recognized for his significant contributions to the sport he embraced at the age of 16 in 1987, he was honored with the prestigious title of Master of Sport Parachuting by the Australian Parachute Federation just last year.
Tragically, Mr. Smith was the sole occupant aboard the ill-fated plane and was pronounced dead at the crash site, as reported by news.com.au. A crime scene has been established, and investigative efforts are underway with specialized officers preparing a report for the coroner’s office.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and the adherence to safety protocols leading up to the accident. A team of transport safety investigators from the ATSB’s Canberra and Brisbane offices will be dispatched to the crash site for further assessment, including drone site surveys, wreckage examination, and recovery of aircraft components for in-depth analysis at the bureau’s technical facilities in Canberra.
While it remains premature to pinpoint any airborne issues, witnesses have recounted hearing unusual noises and observing erratic flight patterns in the final moments preceding the crash, as stated by Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell. Confirming that the single-engine Pilatus Porter plane, manufactured around 1980 in Switzerland, had been in Australian operation for just a month after being imported from New Zealand, Mitchell noted that the aircraft had undergone comprehensive maintenance checks before its arrival. The plane had conducted several jumps in the week and a half leading up to the tragic incident.
