Shoe repair chain Timpson has introduced a new service for trading in mobile phones. The well-known retailer, recognized for services like key cutting, has partnered with gadget resell firm musicMagpie and AO, its owner. Individuals with unwanted handsets can visit a Timpson store and receive cash within minutes, the company announced.
A recent survey revealed that 73% of UK adults possess at least one unused smartphone at home, with an average trade-in value of approximately £250. Research conducted by Censuswide estimates the total value of unused smartphones in the UK to be around £10 billion.
Despite various online resell options available, Timpson aims to cater to customers who prefer face-to-face transactions. The preference for in-person device trade-ins is evident, with 68% of people favoring this method, and one in four emphasizing the importance of immediate payment.
Timpson and musicMagpie initiated a trial of the trade-in service four months ago and have now expanded it to over 1,300 Timpson stores nationwide. John Roberts, CEO and founder of AO World, expressed confidence in the new service, stating that the convenience of trading in old tech at Timpson locations makes it an attractive option for customers.
The collaboration between musicMagpie and Timpson combines refurbishment expertise with a widespread network, enabling customers to unlock the value of their old devices promptly. Steve Oliver, managing director of musicMagpie, views the inclusion of Magpie in Timpson stores as a significant achievement, enhancing convenience for customers.
Sid Hubbard, Timpson’s group director, highlighted the trust and accessibility of Timpson’s colleagues, making the high street experience more enriching for customers. The addition of smartphone trade-in services aligns with Timpson’s long-standing commitment to repairing and extending the life of various goods.
By expanding the reach of musicMagpie services to Timpson stores, the partnership aims to offer enhanced convenience and value to customers across the UK.
