Toronto Hydro has announced that power has been reinstated to numerous residents in the eastern part of the city and sections of downtown following an outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. Via a social media post, the utility confirmed at 10:30 p.m. that their crews had successfully restored power. Toronto Hydro expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the outage and thanked customers and the community for their patience and cooperation during the restoration process.
As per the outage map, more than 31,000 customers were impacted by the outage as of 9:40 p.m. Toronto Hydro attributed the widespread outage to a loss of supply from Hydro One. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) reported that elevators and escalators at several Line 2 subway stations were affected by the outage at one point.
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) issued a statement on Wednesday night indicating that a power failure had been detected in multiple buildings, prompting individuals to vacate the premises immediately or avoid the area. Building evacuations were carried out at Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall on the Toronto Campus. TMU emphasized that evacuations were necessary due to safety system risks posed by the power failure, including potential impacts on fire detection and sprinkler systems.
TMU stated that all classes, laboratories, and exams were expected to be temporarily suspended during the evacuation process. Employees were advised to seek alternative work locations or take a nearby break until power was fully reinstated.
