Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, faced a significant life change this summer as she lost her mother and took on a new role as her older brother’s primary caregiver. Balancing this responsibility while creating a harmonious living environment for two neurodivergent siblings has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.
Her brother, Stuart, is an autistic individual who is also a left-brain stem stroke survivor. Stuart requires assistance with daily tasks such as being handfed due to a hand tremor from the stroke, transfers between wheelchair and commode, as well as help with grooming, bathing, and exercises. Additionally, Stuart experiences emotional lability and is sensitive to loud noises, which can trigger mood swings.
Throughout their lives, Simone witnessed the challenges her brother faced due to his autism, which often led to misunderstandings from others. She recalls moments from their childhood where Stuart’s behavior, such as stimming and introversion, would draw unwanted attention and judgment from peers. Despite these challenges, Simone emphasizes the unique bond she shares with her brother and the efforts she makes to accommodate his needs.
Simone also reflects on her own experiences with ADHD and the concept of “masking” her symptoms to fit societal norms. She acknowledges the importance of managing her own emotions to maintain a peaceful cohabitation with Stuart, highlighting the need for mutual understanding and respect in their living arrangement.
As they navigate their shared living space, Simone aims to empower Stuart by involving him in decision-making processes and respecting his agency. While adjustments have been made to accommodate their individual needs, Simone remains committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for both siblings.
Despite the sacrifices she has made, such as giving up her acting classes to prioritize Stuart’s care, Simone values the opportunity to strengthen her relationship with her brother and create a fulfilling living situation for them both. Through resilience and compassion, she embraces this second chance to be a supportive sibling and caregiver to Stuart.
Their journey serves as a testament to the power of understanding, acceptance, and unconditional love within a neurodivergent family dynamic.
