A couple in Braintree, Essex, has successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy program trial. Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, made the switch from a gas boiler to a system involving over 500 computer banks stored in their shed. This innovative setup generates heat, which is then channeled into their hot water system.
Previously, the Bridges were spending £375 per month to heat their two-bedroom bungalow. Since installing the data center in December 2024, their bills have decreased significantly, now ranging between £40 and £70 monthly. Terrence Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at no longer having to worry about heating costs, particularly as his wife suffers from spinal stenosis, which worsens in the cold.
The HeatHub data center, created by Thermify as part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aims to help low-income households transition to net zero emissions. Mr. Bridges commended the scheme, which also included the installation of solar panels on their roof. The compact system, the size of a chest freezer, has eliminated temperature inconsistencies in their bungalow, providing consistent warmth throughout.
Thermify’s CEO, Travis Theune, highlighted the company’s mission to combat fuel poverty in the UK by offering clean and affordable energy solutions. Eastlight Community Homes’ Daniel Greenwood praised the project’s success in implementing the first heat hub installation in the UK, emphasizing the positive impact on residents’ comfort and financial savings.
The innovative technology of the Thermify Heat Hub demonstrates how advancements can enhance daily living standards while contributing to environmental targets. The positive outcomes observed in the Bridges’ home trial have paved the way for the initiative to expand to more households, with plans to reach 50 additional homes in the next project phase.
