Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s warning to impose a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products from August 19 onwards. Greer described the ongoing talks with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as positive, noting Canada’s preference for a more conciliatory approach.
Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations revealed that Canada views the August 19 deadline as critical, indicating a potential halt in talks if the tariffs are implemented. Greer reiterated the U.S.’ commitment to prioritizing President Trump’s trade policies while expressing willingness to collaborate with Canada if it aligns with American interests.
Trump’s recent tariff ultimatum cited concerns about provincial alcohol bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs. Despite Canada’s willingness to address these issues, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent trade agreement and urged the government to stand firm on dairy negotiations.
Greer highlighted various trade issues with Canada, particularly pointing out alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs. Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, countered Greer’s stance, stating that Canada was merely defending itself against unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S., emphasizing the importance of standing up for Canadian interests.
