Mother Guilty of Child Neglect After Baby Dies in Stoke Tragedy

Must Read

A tragic incident unfolded in the Normacot area of Stoke on Trent as a baby girl lost her life due to neglect while her mother was engrossed in a night of heavy drinking with a friend. Natasha Birks, the 37-year-old mother, faced allegations of failing to monitor her five-month-old daughter, Rhian Mahoney, who was found lifeless on a sofa after not waking for a feed. The situation escalated quickly, and paramedics were only summoned after the baby had already passed away.

Natasha Birks has now been found guilty of child cruelty in connection with the heartbreaking events of 2021. The court learned that Birks and her friend indulged in significant amounts of alcohol, including vodka mixed with orange juice and Irish cream, while the baby was left unattended in another room. Birks neglected to eat anything to counterbalance the effects of the alcohol and frequently left the premises to smoke.

Prosecutors highlighted that Birks failed to adequately supervise her daughter throughout the evening, only briefly glancing at her from a distance. When Rhian missed her regular feeding time and showed signs of deteriorating health, Birks remained oblivious to the unfolding tragedy. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the serious consequences of parental negligence, stressing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and holding parents accountable for their duty of care.

The sentencing for Natasha Birks, convicted of child cruelty, is scheduled for December. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vital role parents play in ensuring the safety and well-being of their children, underscoring the devastating repercussions when this responsibility is disregarded.
