“December Financial Updates: Christmas Bonus, Inflation, Interest Rates”

Must Read

December can be a financially demanding month with Christmas, but there are other significant financial events on the horizon that could impact your finances. Some households will receive a Christmas bonus payment, and there will be updates on inflation and interest rates. Additionally, various winter assistance programs, such as Cold Weather Payments and the Warm Home Discount, will continue throughout December.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to distribute its annual Christmas bonus of £10 to eligible households during the first week of December. This bonus is tax-free, does not affect other benefits, and is expected to be delivered by January 1. To qualify for the Christmas bonus, recipients must be claiming certain benefits.

Inflation figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will be unveiled on December 17, with the current rate at 3.6%, down from its peak of 11.1% in October 2022. The Bank of England will announce its next interest rates decision on December 18, with the current base rate at 4%, having been reduced five times since August 2024 from a peak of 5.25%. These rates influence borrowing costs for customers.

Due to the Christmas and New Year bank holidays, many beneficiaries will receive their payments early next month. For instance, if a benefit is due on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, it will likely be paid on December 24. Similarly, benefit payments scheduled for January 1 will likely be processed on December 31. Self-assessment taxpayers wishing to have HMRC collect tax owed through their PAYE tax code must submit their online returns by December 30, especially if the tax bill is under £3,000 and already paid through PAYE.

Ongoing support programs include Cold Weather Payments of £25 for extended periods of freezing temperatures, Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300, and the Warm Home Discount offering a £150 reduction on electricity bills.
