A man was taken into custody following the hospitalization of his elderly mother, who was found covered in human waste and surrounded by maggots.
Jason Thomas Russell, aged 47, contacted emergency services after discovering his 79-year-old mother with a bleeding wound on her elbow at their residence in Spring Hills, Florida, in the United States. On September 18, he dialed dispatchers and reported her condition, mentioning that she was conscious but making snoring and gurgling sounds.
Upon her arrival at the hospital, medical staff were shocked by the severely deteriorated state of the mother, observing numerous open sores and a disturbing presence of maggots. Tragically, she passed away two days after being admitted. Fire Rescue responders who rushed to the scene witnessed Russell retrieving a bottle of alcohol from the garage and preventing them from accessing the home, hindering their ability to retrieve the mother’s necessary medication.
The man was apprehended after resisting efforts by law enforcement to secure the area as a crime scene. During police questioning, he asserted that his mother did not allow him to provide assistance and described her deteriorating condition over the past half-year, mentioning her refusal to seek medical attention despite his efforts to persuade her to do so, according to reports by Law and Crime.
A representative from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office clarified that Russell served as his mother’s primary caregiver. In an online statement, the office detailed the circumstances, indicating that upon deputies’ arrival, Russell’s residence was declared a crime scene. He was arrested for obstructing an officer without violence after disregarding instructions to remain outside.
Upon entering the house, deputies encountered two heavily soiled couches infested with ants and flies, with a strong ammonia odor pervading the air. Additionally, soiled women’s clothing was discovered in the living space alongside a bedside commode. Russell mentioned resorting to unconventional methods like dipping his mother in a pool or using a cloth for cleaning purposes.
Russell has since been charged with elder abuse and neglect, as well as obstructing law enforcement without violence. He is currently detained at the Hernando County Detention Center and is scheduled for arraignment at the conclusion of the upcoming month.
