Must Read

A renowned educator, once hailed as a “superteacher,” has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping a minor. Lee Brumby, 64, received his sentence on Friday after being found guilty in August of five sexual offenses against the same victim. Despite the gravity of the charges, Brumby remained impassive during the sentencing proceedings.

The victim, in a statement read in court, expressed the enduring impact of the abuse on her daily life, stating that she lives in constant fear and suffers from night terrors that disrupt her sleep and leave her in a state of anxiety. Judge Richard Conley admonished Brumby, emphasizing the shock and dismay that the revelation of his actions would bring to the pupils and parents of the schools where he once held positions of authority.

Brumby, described as a respected figure in the community, was accused of heinous acts that inflicted severe psychological harm on his victim. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Brumby denied all charges, forcing the traumatized victim to testify in court. The abuse, which began when the victim was just a child, continued over a prolonged period, causing lasting emotional distress.

Judge Conley condemned Brumby’s actions as selfish and harmful, highlighting the devastating impact on the victim’s life. The former educator, who had garnered praise for his work in school improvement, was sentenced to 16 years in prison with an additional year on extended licence. Eligibility for parole is set at 10 years and 8 months into his sentence.
