Elena Rybakina faced criticism from tennis legend Pam Shriver for refusing to take a photo with WTA CEO Portia Archer after winning the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia and earning a prize of £4 million. Rybakina, who claimed her biggest title since winning Wimbledon in 2022 by defeating world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, chose not to stand alongside Archer during the customary champion’s photo session, sparking an uncomfortable moment.
The decision was believed to be a protest against the suspension of her coach, Stefano Vukov, for breaching the WTA’s code of conduct. Vukov, who helped guide Rybakina to her Wimbledon victory, had been banned for 12 months earlier in the year but successfully appealed the suspension in August.
Rybakina expressed her satisfaction at having Vukov back on her coaching team, denying any mistreatment and stating that they had never encountered any issues. Despite the backlash from Shriver, who criticized Rybakina for snubbing Archer and working with Vukov, the player remained tight-lipped about the specific reasons for her actions.
In her post-match press conference, Rybakina highlighted the lack of clear communication from the WTA regarding the Vukov situation. She emphasized the challenging journey to her victory, describing it as an incredible week with unexpected results and tough battles.
Sabalenka, who had a successful season with wins at the US Open and runner-up finishes at the Australian Open and French Open, expressed disappointment at falling short in the Finals. She acknowledged Rybakina’s superior performance, admitting to feeling sensitive and proud despite the defeat.
