A tragic incident unfolded as a young man, Patrick Liam Coyle, 27, from Wigan, was found dead in Accrington just six days after being discharged from a mental health facility. Prior to his demise, Patrick had sought help desperately, even visiting the Accident & Emergency department three days post-discharge, expressing his wish to be readmitted. Despite his plea, he was discharged again as his condition was deemed stable since he denied having suicidal intentions.
The inquest, presided over by Area Coroner Kate Bisset at County Hall in Preston, revealed that Patrick had a history of mental health struggles and had recently been discharged from a lengthy inpatient stay. His battle with alcohol addiction exacerbated his risks of impulsive behavior and self-harm, especially when intoxicated. Following his release, he spiraled further into mental distress, resorting to excessive alcohol and medication use.
Despite efforts from mental health support workers to provide ongoing assistance, Patrick’s whereabouts were unknown after March 8, and he was tragically discovered lifeless on March 10. The inquest highlighted his expressed desire to return to inpatient care and the challenges he faced in managing his mental health post-discharge.
