“Dead Mouse Found in Bag Sparks Health Concerns at Edinburgh School”

Must Read

A situation involving the discovery of a deceased mouse in a staff member’s bag at a specialized school has been reported, with staff members alleging a prevalent vermin issue within the premises.

Employees at Kaimes Special School in Edinburgh have raised concerns about an ongoing problem with mice and flies, leading to the contamination of students’ work areas and prompting serious worries about health risks. One staff member characterized the situation as “infested” after a dead rodent was found in a support assistant’s bag, as per reports. The local council has deployed pest control teams to address the issue. Kaimes caters to vulnerable children with autism and additional support requirements.

A message circulated to staff on Thursday, September 25, as seen by Edinburgh Live, highlighted health worries at the school. The communication stated: “The staffroom is untidy, with clothes and bags strewn around. Mice have infiltrated unopened food packages, and a lifeless mouse was discovered in a hanging staff member’s bag. Additionally, flies are present, indicating a decaying matter. We apologize for any distress caused but vigilance is paramount.”

A staff member criticized the unsanitary conditions at the school, deeming them a hazard to student well-being. They expressed, “The infestation of mice and flies has persisted at the school for approximately six months. Mice feces are scattered everywhere, and deceased mice are being found in both buildings. It’s appalling.

“Both students and staff have encountered mice, alive and dead, in various areas of the school. The mere thought of where these mice have been and the potential bacteria we come into contact with daily is nauseating. It’s disheartening to consider that the council appears to disregard the health and welfare of students and staff.”

Councilor James Dalgleish, Education, Children, and Families Convener, stated: “We acknowledge these concerns, and our pest control team has already visited the school to evaluate and initiate a pest management plan. Continuous assessments and inspections will be conducted in collaboration with school staff to monitor risks and ensure that safety measures are in place to uphold health and security protocols.”
