A woman confronted a group of men outside a pub in Hinckley after they shouted at her, leading to a tense situation where she brandished a knife she had concealed in her bra. The incident, captured on CCTV, showed Carlene Francis running towards the men, waving the blade, and needing to be restrained by a friend as she displayed aggressive behavior.
Francis, aged 43, admitted to possessing a blade in public, facing potential imprisonment due to a previous conviction for a similar offense two years ago. She was identified by Leicestershire Police from the CCTV footage and apprehended on the same day, already serving a prison term for other offenses.
Her defense lawyer, Gary Short, explained that Francis had a history of being a victim of assaults, leading her to react aggressively when feeling threatened. He highlighted her troubled past, including childhood sexual abuse, homelessness during her teenage years, and a pattern of drug addiction and mental health struggles.
The CCTV footage revealed that the men she confronted seemed to mock her, while other pub-goers who witnessed the incident quickly resumed their activities without distress. Despite her troubled background, Francis had been making positive strides while incarcerated, holding a job and earning an “enhanced status” in prison.
During sentencing, Recorder Anna Trussler acknowledged Francis’s vulnerabilities and past challenges, expressing hope for her rehabilitation and progress. Francis was sentenced to 35 weeks in jail, with the term starting after her completion of a nine-month sentence, typically halfway through the total term served.
