A young man, Marcus Fakana, passed away in a traffic accident in Tottenham, north London, just three months after his release from imprisonment in Dubai for engaging in a relationship with a British girl. The 19-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle being pursued by police when it collided with another vehicle, resulting in significant injuries that led to his death shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, also a 19-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failure to stop.
Marcus had been sentenced to one year in a UAE prison after entering into a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while he was 18. Despite no official age of consent in Dubai, all sexual activity outside of marriage is prohibited. Following the girl’s mother reporting the relationship to Dubai authorities upon discovering pictures and messages between the two, Marcus was arrested at his hotel.
He spent six months in the notorious al-Awir prison, enduring challenging conditions and limited contact with his family. A campaign led by his family, friends, and Detained in Dubai, a UK legal firm, aimed to secure his release. Eventually, he was granted a royal pardon by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and returned to his family in London.
Tragically, Marcus’s life was cut short in the recent collision. His family expressed their grief on social media, questioning the outcome after fighting for his release from Dubai. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, praised Marcus’s strength and optimism for the future, emphasizing the loss caused by his untimely death.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed details of the fatal crash, indicating that Marcus was the passenger in the pursued vehicle. The driver, Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, has been charged with several offenses, including causing death by dangerous driving. The investigation is ongoing, with relevant authorities informed about the incident.
