“Winamp Revamped: Iconic Music Player Partners with Deezer for Streaming Comeback”

Must Read

A Windows music player with a rich history, Winamp, is undergoing a transformation to compete in the realm of streaming services. In a strategic move, Winamp has partnered with Deezer, an independent music streaming platform, to introduce its own subscription model utilizing Deezer’s technology and music library.

The upcoming platform, slated for launch in early 2027, will offer users access to a vast library of music from streaming services, local files, and internet radio stations. Additionally, users can personalize their interface using the beloved “skins” feature from the original music player.

Although Winamp had somewhat faded from the spotlight during the rise of streaming services, it remains available for download, with over 40 million active users still utilizing the desktop version. Originally launched by Nullsoft in 1997, Winamp quickly gained popularity as a go-to music player for Windows users, boasting 60 million users by 2001.

Recognized for its catchy slogan “Winamp, it really whips the llama’s ass” and efficient performance, Winamp made a significant impact on the digital music landscape. Winamp Group CEO Alexandre Saboundjian expressed excitement about challenging the listening experience once again with the new plans.

While there were previous attempts to venture into streaming, including promises of a mobile version in 2019, Winamp faced challenges in fully realizing these initiatives. Following AOL’s acquisition of Nullsoft in 1999, Winamp encountered difficulties due to management issues and clashes with AOL’s corporate culture, allowing competitors like Apple’s iPod to gain traction.

Despite its setbacks, Winamp is still cherished by music enthusiasts for its customizable skins, symbolizing an era of creative expression. The platform narrowly avoided closure in 2013 when it was acquired by Radionomy, later rebranded as Llama Group and then Winamp Group.

After exploring music NFTs and making comeback attempts in 2023 and 2024, Winamp is now gearing up to introduce a streaming service with pricing details yet to be revealed. Some fans are apprehensive about the introduction of a subscription model, expressing nostalgia for the classic Winamp experience. Following the new platform’s launch, the desktop player will offer a premium subscription option.

As the music industry continues to evolve, Winamp’s next chapter in the streaming world promises to blend innovation with its iconic legacy, offering users a fresh way to experience digital music.
