Must Read

Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a concerning new scam that is on the rise. The telecommunications company has issued an alert following a significant increase in the number of people targeted by fraudulent call center numbers generated by artificial intelligence.

According to Virgin Media O2, millions of individuals may have already fallen victim to calling these fake numbers, leading them to cybercriminals who attempt to steal personal information, including sensitive data like bank details.

Recent data suggests that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers through search engines or AI tools. Criminals are exploiting AI technology to present consumers with counterfeit phone numbers, websites, and search results, enabling them to deceive individuals and commit fraudulent activities.

As more people rely on AI-generated search results for information, hackers are finding it easier to deceive unsuspecting users. Virgin Media emphasizes the importance of only using authentic service numbers provided on official company websites, apps, or billing statements to avoid falling prey to such scams.

To contact O2, customers are advised to dial 202 from an O2 device, while for Virgin Media, calling 150 from a landline is recommended. Additionally, individuals are urged to exercise caution when dealing with phone numbers obtained from search engines, social media posts, or AI tools.

In light of these threats, it is crucial never to disclose security codes or personal details to unknown callers, regardless of their claims. Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the risks posed by AI tools that enable fraudsters to create convincing fake numbers, urging vigilance among consumers.

Virgin Media O2 is taking proactive measures to safeguard customers, including blocking known scammer numbers and employing AI to detect suspicious calls. The company encourages the public to report suspicious numbers to 7726 to help combat scams effectively and protect potential victims from falling prey to fraudulent activities.
