With winter approaching, concerns are rising among Brits about the increasing cost of energy bills. Experts are advising households to take proactive steps to save money and prevent costly repairs. Simple tasks like checking insulation, draught-proofing, and bleeding radiators can potentially save up to £700.
A recent study of 2,000 adults highlighted that many households are unprepared for winter. More than half admit to delaying basic maintenance tasks, which can lead to higher energy bills and expensive repairs when temperatures drop.
Neglecting radiator maintenance before winter has cost two-thirds of households an average of £330 in avoidable repairs. Additionally, 31% confessed to skipping their annual boiler service, risking an average repair cost of £392 if the boiler malfunctions during winter.
To support households in winter preparation, Smart Energy GB, in collaboration with National Energy Action and professional organiser Dilly Carter, has released a Winter Prep Checklist. Taking proactive measures like servicing the boiler, DIY draught-proofing, and monitoring energy usage with a smart meter can help households stay warm and save money during the colder months.
It was found that many people delay winter preparations until the season is underway, with the average recognition date being 23rd October. Some individuals purposely avoid thinking about winter to prolong the summer enjoyment, while others forget to take action while the weather is still mild.
Victoria Bacon, director at Smart Energy GB, emphasized the importance of early preparation for winter. Installing a smart meter, servicing the boiler, and participating in energy reward schemes can all contribute to cost-effective energy usage throughout winter.
Households are advised to regularly check and service their boilers, adjust flow temperatures for efficiency, program heating timers, bleed radiators, address draughts, and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature between 18 and 21 degrees to optimize energy usage and savings during winter.
