“Acclaimed Nutritionist Warns: Brits’ Morning Beverages Could Harm Health”

Must Read

An acclaimed nutritionist has raised concerns that half of the morning routines of British individuals could be detrimental to their health.

According to a study conducted by Gatorade, over half (58%) of people prefer a cup of coffee or tea over water to kick start their day, despite the fact that the caffeine boost is often short-lived for 46% of them, with another 42% reporting no noticeable impact.

Dr. Emily Prpa, a respected nutrition scientist, points out that many attribute their morning sluggishness to factors like poor sleep or stress when in reality, their initial beverage choice may be the culprit. Dr. Prpa emphasizes that upon waking up, the body is typically dehydrated, making a glass of water the ideal first drink to rehydrate effectively.

While dry mouth is the most prevalent sign of dehydration experienced by Brits (65%), followed by thirst (70%), fatigue (54%), and headaches (29%), a significant portion (52%) overlook dehydration as the cause, often attributing these symptoms to poor sleep or stress.

Dr. Prpa underscores the importance of prioritizing hydration over caffeine consumption in the morning to combat issues like fatigue, headaches, dry mouth, and brain fog. She recommends establishing a habit of hydrating before reaching for caffeinated beverages to enhance overall health and energy levels.

Despite the critical role hydration plays in well-being, only 59% of Brits manage to meet the recommended water intake twice a week or less. Additionally, a considerable percentage (64%) have never purchased electrolyte drinks, mistakenly believing these are exclusively for athletes or gym enthusiasts.

To optimize hydration levels, Dr. Emily suggests five key tips:

1. Start your day with a glass of water before consuming tea or coffee.
2. Avoid consuming fluids all at once; sip steadily throughout the day.
3. Include fruits and vegetables with high-water content in your diet.
4. Consider electrolyte supplements, especially during physical activity or high perspiration.
5. Implement strategies to make hydration a seamless part of your routine, such as keeping a water bottle in sight and infusing it with fruit.

The research findings that highlight the importance of hydration have prompted Gatorade to introduce its Hydration Booster, a blend of carbohydrate-electrolytes available in powder sachets in flavors such as Lemon Lime, Cherry Lime, and Strawberry Watermelon. These electrolytes can be purchased for £17.00 (12 pack) on the Gatorade website and Amazon, with availability expanding to more retailers soon.
