“Drone Near-Miss Shuts Down Runway at Amsterdam Airport”

Must Read

A major European airport had to close one of its runways due to a unique incident, as stated by the police. The Polderbaan runway at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam was shut down for 45 minutes around 12:10 pm because of a drone flying at an altitude of approximately 150m. During a live YouTube stream by plane enthusiasts, a Transavia pilot mentioned that the drone came within about 50m of their aircraft.

The presence of the drone led to a police operation, including a helicopter search, but both the drone and its operator could not be located. A spokesperson for the Royal Marechaussee, the military police, described the situation as “quite unique,” suggesting that the drone operator was likely flying it as a hobby.

Authorities believe the drone was relatively small, and they assured that air traffic remained unharmed. However, the incident necessitated the redirection of planes to another runway for safety measures.

As this incident appears to be related to recreational drone use, recent events in other European countries have raised more serious concerns. The Danish Defence Ministry reported multiple drone sightings at Danish defense facilities, with some incidences causing temporary closures of Danish airports.

Local media outlets reported sightings of drones near or above Karup Air Base, Denmark’s largest military base. The defense ministry refrained from confirming these sightings, citing operational security and an ongoing investigation as reasons for the lack of detailed information.

Despite numerous unconfirmed drone sightings reported by concerned citizens, tensions have heightened in Denmark over drone activities. The public has been urged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

Recent drone activities at Danish airports and military bases, coupled with similar incidents in other parts of Europe, have sparked security concerns amidst escalating tensions in the region.
