An expert has raised concerns about Russia’s aggressive military tactics, indicating a deliberate effort to intimidate the UK and NATO. Eliza Manningham-Buller, the former head of MI5, suggested that the UK might already be engaged in a conflict with Russia.
This revelation follows remarks by Dr. Fiona Hill, a former White House adviser, who asserted that Moscow’s actions, including poisonings, assassinations, cyber attacks, and influence operations, demonstrate that Russia is at war with the West. Manningham-Buller echoed this sentiment, citing Russian activities in Ukraine, such as sabotage and intelligence operations, as evidence of a potential war scenario.
Recent incidents of Russian aircraft incursions reported by Poland, Denmark, and Estonia have heightened tensions within NATO, prompting concerns of potential escalation. As Russia continues its aggressive actions and peace talks stall, anxiety over the conflict’s trajectory grows across Europe.
Professor Natasha Lindstaedt from the University of Essex believes that Russia is employing “hybrid war tactics” to test the UK and NATO’s responses. In an interview with The Mirror, Lindstaedt explained that Russia’s recent drone activities over several countries aim to create psychological disruption and uncertainty, a strategy known as “sharp power.”
While acknowledging Russia’s frustration with its inability to win conventional conflicts, Lindstaedt emphasized that Russia is striving to convey a message to the UK and NATO through its hybrid tactics. She warned that Russia’s actions serve as a warning to stay out of conflicts or face potential repercussions, including disruptions, economic consequences, and uncertainty.
To counter cyber threats and drone incursions, Lindstaedt stressed the need for better-equipped defenses beyond reliance on expensive military equipment.
