A former student from Leeds University in the UK passed away due to malnutrition resulting from a strict raw fruit diet she adopted at the age of 19 out of a fixation with “clean eating.” The individual, identified as Karolina Krzyak, a native of Poland, experienced a severe decline in health during a trip to Bali in December 2024. Witnesses at the Sumberkima Hill resort in Bali noted that she appeared severely undernourished with sunken eyes and was so weak that she required assistance to move.
After just three days at the resort, Karolina was discovered deceased in her room. Prior to her passing, she had been battling various health issues, including dental decay. A friend of Karolina disclosed that she had been struggling with osteoporosis, albumin deficiency, and edema, and had sought advice within a social media group dedicated to raw veganism.
In a post dated October 22, 2022, shared on a Facebook group focused on the healthiest raw vegan diet, Karolina expressed concerns about her deteriorating health, seeking advice on her yellowing and crumbling nails. Despite her declining condition, Karolina remained committed to veganism, attributing it to broadening her perspectives and expressing gratitude for the lifestyle.
Friends observed Karolina’s deteriorating physical state over time, noting her struggle to maintain balance and walk slowly to prevent accidents. Despite her willingness to seek help, she insisted on adhering to a raw vegan diet as part of any treatment plan. A health coach specializing in fruitarianism remarked on Karolina’s alarmingly low weight, estimating her weight at no more than 4.2 stone.
Karolina’s tragic demise underscores the need for both medical and psychological intervention, as her behaviors were often endorsed by her social circle instead of being challenged.
