Renowned chimpanzee expert Dr. Jane Goodall, a leading authority on these primates and a UN Messenger of Peace, has passed away at the age of 91 while on a speaking tour in California. The Jane Goodall Institute confirmed her death due to natural causes in a recent Facebook post.

Dr. Goodall’s groundbreaking studies as an ethologist transformed the scientific understanding of primates, and she was a dedicated advocate for the preservation of our natural environment. Over nearly seven decades, she worked closely with chimpanzees, earning accolades such as the Mirror’s Animal Hero award and a damehood for her exceptional contributions to the field.

Reflecting on her early interactions with the chimpanzees, Dr. Goodall recalled the pivotal moment when one of them, David Greybeard, approached her, signifying a breakthrough in their relationship. Despite facing challenges and moments of fear, she continued her research, capturing remarkable footage of her interactions with the apes, some of which were documented by her future husband, a cameraman.

Born in London in 1934, Dame Jane embarked on her research journey in Tanzania in 1960, eventually establishing the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to advance wildlife conservation and youth initiatives supporting animal welfare and environmental causes. In 2002, she was appointed a UN Messenger of Peace, recognized for her tireless efforts in safeguarding the planet and its inhabitants.

The United Nations paid tribute to Dr. Goodall, acknowledging her significant contributions to conservation and her enduring legacy of advocacy for the environment and wildlife.
